A number of people have asked me about liability insurance coverage for car-free cyclists, perhaps in response to my previous post. Suppose you are a car-free cyclist and you cause an accident in which someone is injured or their property is damaged. What do you do about the injured party's claim against you?
If you have assets you should protect them. If you own a home your home owner's insurance should provide liability coverage. If you don't own a home you should consider renter's insurance. You should clarify with your carrier the liability claims coverage limits and that the liability insurance would cover you in the event that you cause injuries or property damage in the course of operating your bicycle. Your homeowner's or renters policy should also cover damage to your bicycle in the event that you are in an accident with an uninsured driver (minus your deductible of course).
